On Friday last week we were called to a deer caught in electric fencing in a field near Blackboys, Uckfield.
The deer had been cut free but collapsed in the field. This made our job harder as when we approached the deer she tried to run off in panic. Luckily we were able to catch her and get her into Henley House Vets at Uckfield where she was placed on vital life-saving fluids and then rushed up to St Tiggywinkles in Buckinghamshire for specialist treatment.

We had another bat to deal with on Friday – this time a Brown long-eared bat at Little Common near Bexhill. The bat was the victim of a cat attack and had several puncture wounds to its wings and body. The bat was taken to Jenny Clark at Forest Row where she cleaned up the wounds and used antibiotic cream.
Jenny is optomistic that the bat will survive and has settled the poor little creature in her hospital to recover.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the animal service at St Mary's Church, Old Town, Eastbourne, on Sunday. It was so nice to see so many caring people with their pets. About 90 people attended with about 40 animals including a pet rat. It was really nice to meet everyone and to be shown so much support for our charity. WRAS is going through some very difficult times at the moment both financially and as an organisation and at times it feels easier to give up, but it is your support as shown on Sunday which really helps keep me and our other volunteers going, so thank you very much.

We will be holding an open meeting at Edgmond Evangelical Church, Church Street, Old Town, Eastbourne, on Monday October 13 at 7.30pm.
I will be giving a presentation on WRAS's work, along with other members of WRAS. We are really keen for new supporters and volunteers to come along. We are keen to build up a group of volunteers who can help us with events in the area, hold a coffee morning or get even more involved with organising events.

We are also looking to recruit more volunteers to help with next year's baby and fledgling bird season, and to find people who would be willing to help with the feeding and cleaning of flegdlings and their aviaries in Eastbourne too.

We will be looking for people to help overwinter hedgehogs this autumn. These will require feeding and cleaning over winter and they are then released back where they were found in the spring once awake.

Thanks to the donation of a secondhand veterinary ambulance jointly funded by Lewes District Council and the Edna Smylie Memorial Fund, we are looking to take on a few more rescuers to help respond to calls.

East Sussex WRAS is a voluntary organisation which relies on donations. We do not receive funding from government nor the RSPCA. Anyone wishing to make a donation should contact WRAS's treasurer Peter Mortimer at Ash Cottage, 73 Friday Street, Eastbourne, BN23 8AY. www.wildlifeambulance.org 24-hour rescue line: 07815 078 234.
