Jazz at the Under Ground Theatre in Eastbourne brings appropriately hot sounds to the town centre theatre for its Swinging the Samba gig on Friday, July 4 (8pm), with a fabulous Latin-tinged band.

The Alan Barnes/Art Themen Band was put together originally for the closing set of the Appleby Jazz Festival, playing various Latin-based numbers, but it worked so well the end result was a CD and a string of subsequent bookings.

Featuring as varied a Latin book as possible, from slinky Jobim to 1950’s ballroom flamboyance, this set swings along exuberantly.

On the front line are the saxes and clarinet of Barnes and Themen - two of the most popular musicians who’ve played at the UGT.

Appearing with them are John Donaldson (piano), Dave Barry (drums) and Simon Thorpe (bass).

Together, they play a programme of Latin standards, plus one or two originals. This gig promises to be lively; full of swing and laced with fun!
