Final preparations are underway for the Rye Jazz & Blues Festival which runs from Thursday, August 21, to Monday, August 25 - encompassing the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Now in its 3rd year the Festival offers both variety and intimacy with live performances taking place at an array of venues in the historic town. Music genres include Jazz, Blues, Soul, Funk, Swing, Latin, Fusion and World Music.
Star studded headline acts include virtuoso Jazz guitarist Antonio Forcione, rising singer songwriter Julia Biel - both performing on the Friday (August 22).
Jazz pianist Jason rebello, right-hand man to both Sting and Jeff Beck performs with his soulful, jazz fusion quartet and guest soul singer Joy Rose on Saturday (August 23).
Concerts also take place at the world-famous Mermaid Inn where trumpet player and composer Paul Higgs and Pavan perform on Saturday.
Other concerts at the Mermaid include a special musical tribute to the legendary Hoagy Carmichael on Saturday and Derek Nash, saxophonist to Jools Holland, on Bank Holiday Monday (August 25).
Other stand-out concerts also take place at The George in Rye and include sensational jazz singers Joe Stilgoe and OBE first lady of British jazz, Claire Martin on Monday.
Earl Okin, undoubtedly one of the foremost exponents of Latin rhythms, Bossa Nova and Samba with a real touch of genius performs on Sunday.
Two additional outstanding concerts include award winning British saxophonist Simon Spillett and his quartet, which includes acclaimed bassist Alec Dankworth and legendary jazz pianist John Critchison, on Sunday.
If that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite then make way for Jazz diva Kitty LaRoar who purrs into Rye performing her distinctive and mesmerising style of Jazz at the George on Saturday
Jazz and Soul singer Ola Onabule perform with his five piece band on Sunday at St Mary’s Church. Ola Onabule’s voice is unmistakably gentle and wistful, haunting and heartbreaking - reminiscent of the great soul and jazz voices of the 1960s and 70s.
A Jazz Lounge plays host to late-night sessions with the hottest performances from Gareth Lockrane’s funk outfit Grooveyard, acclaimed Italian saxophonist Renato D’Aiello and the coolest Latin Trio the Violet Jive.
Alongside the professional concerts the festival programme includes may free events; the Butter Market Semi-Acoustic performances; the George Courtyard session; street entertainment and a cutting edge modern twist on a New Orleans Marching Band called 2nd Line Fat Tuesday... all meaning fun, music filled, atmospheric August Bank Holiday weekend.
The festival’s free programme also presents three days of outstanding Blues, Jazz and Soul at the Ypres outdoor performance stage.
