All Saints Chapel, Meads, hopes a major musical event this Spring Bank Holiday week (May 3-5). Star attraction at Gods & Heroes is Sir John Tomlinson, a Sussex resident, who has sung major roles in the world’s top local opera houses.
In celebrating the bi-centenary of the births of Guiseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, as well as the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, a series of concerts, masterclasses and lectures will feature a cast of outstanding international artists.
Arranged by the Music Club of London in conjunction with the Mastersingers Company, the programme has been organised by international opera director Dave Edwards. One hundred members of the Music Club of London and Wagner Society will attend and there are also tickets to all events available for local music enthusiasts.
A highlight will be the concert tomorrow Saturday), at 7.30pm in which Sir John, accompanied by other singers, will perform excerpts from operas by Britten, Verdi and Wagner. On Sunday, at 11am, Sir John will be interviewed on his career by Fiona Maddocks, distinguished music critic of The Observer.
This will probably be the finest assembly of opera singers ever to visit Eastbourne - and with the greatest amount of Wagner to be heard locally.
