Led by Steeleye Span’s long serving bowman, Peter Knight - one of this country’s best-known fiddle players - his band Gigspanner seems custom built to support the more fluid side of his musical personality.
The quality of Peter’s performance was endorsed by the late Sir Terry Pratchett who observed that he “can spin the world on his bow” and for this special final night of the Gigspanner tour he brings regular stalwart and guitar supremo Roger Flack with him and a new percussionist, Gary Hammond, who spent many years behind the drumkit for the Beautiful South.
The audience can expect stunning solos from Gary, playing with hands on a collection of Conga’s and Djembe Drums.
Traditional music forms the bedrock of the trio’s repertoire, but the approach is what sets it apart, leaving enough room with the arrangements to spread and stretch the music in the moment.
Multicultural influences are fed into the mix, that flirt audaciously with French, Cajun, African, Cuban and even Aboriginal traditions.
But whatever the style, Peter Knight is the star, skipping and slipping with the bow or seamlessly switching to pizzicato finger picking. Peter won two Musician Of The Year awards in 2016 on the strength of Gigspanner’s highly acclaimed album, Layers Of Ages. Tickets £18.50, book in advance at the Hailsham Pavilion on 01323 841414.
