The English Anthems to be performed by Eastbourne Choral Society this Saturday evening will showcase some classic works of English church music, featuring some of the best-loved composers in this great musical tradition.
They are Handel, who was commissioned to write four great Coronation anthems, and Hubert Parry whose I Was Glad was performed at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Two of the other composers featured in the performance, Ralph Vaughan Williams and John Ireland, studied under Parry at the Royal College of Music. This connection underlines the continuity of a strong musical facet of national life, which the choir will celebrate at All Saints’ Church, Grange Road, on Saturday November 28, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets (price £12) from the Tourist Information Centre or at the door; more info at www.eastbournechoralsociety.org.uk.
