Rehearsals are in full swing for Eastbourne Choral Society’s concert on the opening night of the Eastbourne Festival, Saturday July 7 at 7.30pm.

Ahoy – Sing for the Mary Rose is a piece written for adult and children’s choirs and jazz quintet, weaving together sea shanties, new music and Tudor melodies.

The piece begins with a narrative spoken over the musical overture which tells the story of the ship, her launch in 1511, her unexpected demise in 1545 and rise to fame again 450 years later. ECS will be joined by three school choirs, including Meads and The Causeway school, for the performance and accompanied by composer Alexander L’Estrange and his jazz quintet. The concert will be at All Saints’ Church, Grange Road.
