Shedding light on a feud between artists

On Sunday October 11 at 3pm popular lecturer Dr Prasannajit De Sliva will present a talk in the Birley Centre on two painters whose artistic differences led to one of the notorious rivalries of their day - Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Today they hang side by side in the worlds galleries, but during their lifetime they pursued a lifelong feud and squabbles over the hanging of their paintings and jostling for royal favour.

Dr De Silva will illuminate the work and lives of these great painters, delving into their bitter and emotional rivalry, which was only reconciled on Gainsborough’s death bed, when both men expressed admiration for each other’s work. Tickets £13 (Members £11) Refreshments included.
