Record response to show from local artists

The seventh annual East Sussex Open opens tomorrow at the Towner Gallery bringing together the best artists from across the region.

From 330 entries, 70 artists were selected for the exhibition, spanning a wide range of media, from painting, drawing and photography to sculpture, installation and moving image works.

Brian Cass, head of exhibitions, said: “This year we received a record number of applicants. It was exciting and insightful to see so many talented locally-based artists and their submissions were as strong as they were varied. Ultimately we were impressed by the integrity of the work by the selected artists and how they each pursued, in very different ways, a personal vision that draws on their immediate experience of the world.”

The artists in this year’s show were selected by Jenni Lomax, director of Camden Arts Centre, artist Melanie Manchot, who has recently presented a major exhibition at Towner, and Brian Cass.

Brian added: “Presented for the first time in Towner’s extensive second floor gallery, the exhibition is a unique opportunity for artists at every level of their career, from emerging artists to established figures, to present new and significant works.”

In 2015 the exhibition enjoyed 30,000 visitors, and artists who have previously shown work include Joseph Long, selected for the John Moore’s Painting Prize 2010; Judith Alder shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013; Toby Tatum whose work screened in the Experimenta film category at the 58th BFI London Film Festival 2014; and Hermione Allsopp who was shortlisted for the Mark Tanner Sculpture Prize in 2013.
