As the Eastbourne Festival of Arts and Culture takes a sabbatical this year local artists have arranged to have their own Spring Open Houses and Studios. These will take place in various venues across town from April 16-24. The Artists’ Open Houses will take place during the weekends, with studios and galleries open weekdays too.
There will be 50 artists and makers in over 20 venues taking part, including popular favourites like Elda Abramson with her flower, Eastbourne, Calais and Ireland paintings, Jack Futter with his large, inky abstracts, Blue Monkey artists with contemporary works and the Big House showing a variety of paintings, ceramics, jewellery, sculpture, stained glass and textiles, plus the chance to have a go at throwing a pot on the potter’s wheel or doing a life drawing. James Heighway and Roy Morris are two of the artists exhibiting for the first time.
The Open Houses and Studios are an excellent way for the public to not only meet local artists but to see original artwork displayed in a domestic setting. You will find there is something for everyone whatever the size of your purse. Together with the Open Houses there will be several exhibitions including a Pop-Up Gallery and a craft market, both in the Enterprise Centre. With free admission to houses, studios and galleries, you may be lucky and find cake too!
Then there is Unfold’s ‘Lifting the Lid of the Button Box’ an event at the Birley Centre at 2pm on Sat 16th April when the author of the recently published book The Button Box, Lynn Knight, will be in conversation with textile artist Christine Chester. Members of the audience, will be invited to share their button box experiences. It’s extraordinary how many people remember tipping out a tin of buttons and playing with their colours and shapes. Christine will be encouraging everyone to do something imaginative at Studio 11 and record the results in words and pictures. Contact Christine (www.christinechester.com) if you have buttons to donate or to buy a ticket (£3) for the event at the Birley Centre. Tickets on sale at tourist information.
