Youngsters must play without fear
Eastbourne Cricket Club captain Mark Tomsett has urged his young side to play with freedom and climb up the Sussex Premier League table.
The skipper was impressed with the display in the tied match with East Grinstead last Saturday – and wants more of the same going into the second half of the season.
Tomsett admitted a push for the title was now unlikely, with Preston Nomads continuing to look like champions elect.
But he backed his side to finish strongly now the pressure is off.
He told Herald Sport, "If I'm honest the title is probably out of reach.
"I now want us to carry on working as hard as we can, play with freedom and enjoy our cricket.
"Hopefully we can finish between third and fifth, maybe even second if we can get everything together."
Eastbourne welcome Hastings Priory to the Saffrons tomorrow (Saturday).
The visitors may include South African paceman Pepler Sandri, who took four wickets on his Sussex debut against Australia last week.
How many of Eastbourne's Sussex contingent will be available though is again in question, with the Friends Provident Trophy semi-final at Hove on Sunday.
James Kirtley is almost certain to be in the Sussex line-up, while Ollie Rayner and Ben Brown may also be involved. Ragheb Aga may return from injury but Angus Stewart is away working at Wimbledon.
On paper, it looks a winnable game for Eastbourne given Hastings' poor start to the season, but Tomsett is taking nothing for granted.
He said, "They won last week which has lifted them away from the bottom two, so they will come to us with a lot of confidence.
"They may well have Sandri playing for them and they've got a lot of experience.
"There's obviously a rivalry there but they're a good bunch of lads.
We'll play hard on the field but afterwards we'll all have a drink together, which is how it should be."
