Slow starts catch-up with the Eagles

It proved the conclusion to a not so Good Friday for the Eagles at Arlington on Friday evening as they followed their afternoon disappointment, a 55-36 reverse at the home of the Lakeside Hammers with a defeat on more familiar shale.

The Essex outfit completing the double and sealing a rare victory in Sussex by a 51-45 scoreline.

Indeed it could possibly have been so much worse as on the evidence of the opening heats it had all the makings of a shocker with the Eagles finding themselves on the receiving end of four consecutive 5-1’s in the first four races.

Potential humiliation was on the cards but they forced their way back into the match a fifth race 8-1 and a seventh heat 5-1 slicing the margin to 5-points, 25-20. For a time it appeared that momentum could witness another stunning Sussex turnaround.

But it was not to be and the experience of Watt and Richardson around Arlington helped the Lakeside to as the Hammers to their six point victory.

The one crumb of comfort that they could extract was that their maximum to close proceedings prevented their local rivals from taking only three and not the maximum four League points from the contest and it also witnessed the singular defeat on the night for Richardson.

Eagles boss Trevor Geer said, “I have never seen anything like that at Eastbourne.

“I didn’t expect that at all. At least we did get back into the match a little bit, our tacticals worked but sadly it wasn’t enough”
