Eagles to unleash their strongest side on Coventry

As the season reaches its halfway mark, the Eastbourne Eagles will be hoping all their bad luck has been and gone as they look to secure an Elite League play-off spot.

The first half of the season didn’t go to plan for Trevor Geer’s men as they lost number one rider Joonas Kylmakorpi in just the second meet of the season.

Since then, a rollercoaster of results have seen them settle in fourth spot after 13 meets, but they now hope a busy ‘make or break’ week will give them the chance to propel themselves up the table.

Victory over Lakeside Hammers on Monday got the week off to the best possible start but Geer will be hoping his team can round-off the perfect week by repeating the result in two away trips in two days.

The Eagles travel to Birmingham to race on Thursday night and will stay in the Midlands to face Coventry on Friday evening.

The Eagles currently occupy the last play-off spot in the Elite League but Birmingham are hot on their heels in fifth place.

A win for the Brummies could see them overtake the Eagles in fourth place having played three meets less.

The Eagles should be hoping to take maximum points from their Friday meet with Coventry, who are struggling near the foot of the table with only one win to their name so far this season.

When the two teams met at Arlington in May, the home side triumphed but only by a three-point margin.

However, the Eagles can now unleash their full-strength squad on their rivals after the return of in-form Kylmakorpi

Geer believed once the injured rider regained his fitness, the team could really begin their season and surprise a few of the leading teams in the league.

This they did with a pleasing victory over third-placed Lakeside Hammers on Monday night with a full-strength seven for the first time since March.

The win moved Eastbourne to within four points of the Hammers and they now look to use the second-half of the season to hone in on a top-four finish.
