Smith makes Surrey loan switch
Eastbourne spinner Tom Smith has admitted his Sussex future is in the balance after completing a loan move to Surrey.
Smith, 21, was on the verge of signing for Worcestershire earlier this summer before the deal fell through but this week made the switch to the Oval.
He just missed out on being named in Surrey's line-up for their Division Two County Championship match at Essex, which began on Wednesday, and instead took 12th-man duties.
The move reunites him with former Sussex captain Chris Adams, who is now cricket manager at Surrey.
Smith hopes the move away from Hove, where first team chances are limited, will allow him to play more first team cricket.
He told Herald Sport, "It's been between me and Will Beer in one-day cricket and he's bowled really well. In the Championship, Sussex haven't been going in with two spinners and Ollie Rayner has bowled brilliantly.
"When Chris Adams rang me, I knew this was an opportunity I couldn't really turn down."
Smith, who has a year left to run on his Sussex contract, added he would be considering his options at the end of the season.
Surrey made the move for Smith after their regular off-spinner Simon King suffered a bruised foot.
Adams told the official Surrey CCC website, "Tom is a good young bowler and will give us an added dimension going into some very important games."
Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson said, "This is a great opportunity for Tom to get some first team cricket and will help his development as a quality spin bowler."
