Skipper Cumming blasts 138 not out

Eastbourne’s seconds ensured a clean sweep of victories for all three teams at the weekend by destroying a poor Haywards Heath team at The Saffrons on Saturday.

Eastbourne batted first, and though Jamie Goddard was tied down early on, he eventually began to score more freely.

For skipper Darren Cumming there was no such constraints – he started positively and went from there, treating the attack with near disdain.

Cumming had just reached his century when Goddard fell for 72.

He was run out, and it was to be Haywards Heath’s only wicket.

Alex Pollard smashed 51 not out in 34 balls, but the star performance was from Cumming, whose 138 not out took just 106 balls and featured 27 boundaries.

He declared immediately after Pollard had reached his half-century, with the score on 266 for one after just 43 overs.

Things didn’t get any better for Haywards Heath with the bat.

Harry McLeod struck early on and then Mark Trubshaw picked up two quick wickets.

Chris Jones came on and rattled through the middle order, taking four for 22 in seven excellent overs.

Cumming permed his bowlers, trying to keep the visitors interested in playing their shots, and eventually they were all out for 161 in as one-sided a match as you could hope to see.
