Almost 300 players packed The Dome, Doncaster on Saturday for the largest one day event in the table tennis calendar – the Butterfly Schools’ Individual Championship Finals.

This event, organised by the English Schools’ Table Tennis Association, boasted one of its largest ever entries with players in eight age categories. 750 matches were played on 22 tables before the Championships were decided.

15-year-old St Bede’s Student Yuki Wat represented East Sussex in the final, as she had won the U16 County title in February. She finished in second place.

Second seed Isobel Ashley (Derbyshire) won her group comfortably and continued through the knockout stages of the competition to the semi-final where she met unseeded Yuki. Yuki proved too good for the Derbyshire player and the final needed all five games to decide the winner with both players having match points which they were unable to convert.

The final score in favour of the more experienced Emily was 9-11, 11-5,11-6, 4-11, 14-12. Yuki is a player to watch for the future.
