Will Marler be the first of the Mohicans for England?

Colourful rugby rogue Joe Marler has been given the chance to cut it on the international stage, if he cuts his hair off of it.

The unconventional Harlequins player, who was born in Eastbourne, has been told he must tone down his multi-coloured Mohican if he wants to be a part of the England side for the RBS Six Nations Championship next month.

The former Sussex Downs player has been drafted into the 32-man squad and will be hoping to make the final line-up.

The eccentric prop-forward has sported a range of different coloured hair styles in the past, from flame-red to bright blue.

He even sprayed the words ‘Jolly Hog Sausage Company’ into his shaved scalp to promote his team-mate’s catering business.

But, as England attempt to regain some old-school discipline following a shame-filled World Cup campaign last year, head coach Stuart Lancaster has told Marler to get a decent haircut or he won’t be picked for the Six Nations squad.

Marler started playing rugby at the age of 11 for Eastbourne Sharks before moving to Sussex Under 14-18.

He represented London & South East in 2006 and then stepped up to, not only play for England Under 18s, but to captain them too.

Now, the 21-year old is looking for his first full international cap, but at what expense?

The Quins prop, who also has a penchant for bizarre-coloured boots, has refused to mute his image in the past, arguing that his appearance doesn’t affect his performance on the pitch.

Marler continues to come back to his roots, Headworks Barbers in Bexhill-on-Sea to be specific, whenever he fancies a change to his bright and brilliant barnet.

But, with the lure of a potential place in the England first team up for grabs, will Marler be returning for a more conventional cut or will he win his battle for individualism and become the first of the Mohicans to represent England on the international stage?
