‘Messy’ cup win but progress pleases Mal
Improvements have been seen throughout the levels at Eastbourne Rugby Club - a progression that was highlighted in Eastbourne’s RFU Junior Vase triumph against Portsmouth United Services.
With the first team down to its bare bones through injury and unavailability, a number of players were drafted in from the seconds and thirds to fill the gaps and they ably stepped up to the plate to help the Blue and Golds storm to a 29-3 victory.
Director of Rugby Mal Chumbley said, “It was a pleasing game in the respect that we had a couple of people playing out of position and it gave me a good chance to watch some of the new players who’d come in.
“One player in question, Aaron Stevenson, was performing well in the fourths so we put him on for 15-20 minutes and he held his own.
“Improving all levels of rugby is important to us and it’s very pleasing to see we have that talent and strength in depth.”
Eastbourne booked their place in the last 16 of the Junior Vase in a ‘messy’ and ‘niggly’ match with US, in which Chumbley believes his side learnt another valuable lesson.
“We didn’t manage our emotions very well and reacted to the provocation, which detratced us from our game.
“If the lads get easily riled by the opposition, it may come back to hurt us against stronger teams and we need to recognise that and put our emotions under control.
“We’re looking forward to returning to the league, where we need to relax and focus.”
