Cold snap gives coach Chumbley cause for concern

As Eastbourne Rugby Club continue to battle against the weather as well as their opponents, coach Mal Chumbley insists the main focus is on players’ safety during the

current icy spell.

The Blue and Golds faced Holbrook last weekend in freezing weather and, with temperatures plummeting to -4C during the week, the club are keeping a close eye on their men.

Chumbley said, “We got through the Holbrook match injury free, which was obviously a good thing,

“The pitch was heavy underfoot but that wasn’t as bad as the cold, rain and sleet.

“The risk of hypothermia was a genuine one. We joked about it but, back in the changing room awfterwards, the boys were still shivering and it was a serious concern.

“We’ll be watching them closely because their safety is the most important thing.”

Eastbourne won said clash with Holbrook by a narrow 8-0 margin but Chumbley insists the pitch held them back from putting in the performance they would have wished.

“We controlled territory and possession but because of the conditions, we couldn’t execute the dominance we had.

“It was frustrating because we probably should have beaten them by a bigger score line than we did. We had a couple of tries disallowed too, which didn’t help.

“It was a difficult game to win but we played as much rugby as we could and we just did enough.”

This weekend, the Blue and Golds travel to bottom of the table Midhurst still hoping to close the three-point gap between themselves and Burgess Hill at the top of the table.

“Midhurst are struggling a little bit but we’ll go there with the same approach as before any opposition in this league.

“This half of the season gives me the chance to bring some second team players into the first team match day squad, rather than just on the bench. It’s important to know they’re capable of stepping up and now we can put that to the test.”
