Eastbourne Cricket Club would take a huge step towards clinching promotion if they can beat local rivals Bexhill on Saturday.
Mark Tomsett’s men currently have a 39-point lead over their third-placed opponents, which, should they win when Behxill visit the Saffrons this weekend, could stretch to 69 points with three games remaining and with Bexhill also due to face second-placed Goring-By-Sea on the final day of the season.
However, the Eastbourne captain insists that, despite having those two teams hot on their heels, excitement over-rides pressure as the primary emotion ahead of Saturday’s crunch clash.
Tomsett said, “In the next two weeks, we face second and third but it’s completely in our hands. It’s a really exciting time. If we win both of those matches, we’ve wrapped up promotion with two games to spare, and potentially the title as well.
“The ball’s in our court. As far as I’m concerned, the pressure is all on them to win and catch us. We know our job and we’re in a good position to do it.
“Bexhill are a very good side and they’ll be really up for the game, as will we. There’s a really nice confidence around the team and it is a really exciting time, but we must focus on the game first and foremost.”
Likely XI: Tomsett, Finzel, Jackson, Wells, Cooke, Watts, Patel, Twine, H. Smith, Pulford, C. Smith.
