Eastbourne second XI were unable to force their way to victory at the picturesque Seaford College ground in their game against Chichester Priory Park.

Put in to bat, Eastbourne were inspired by Alex Pollard, who made an excellent 70, coming in at number three.

On a superb batting track with a small outfield, all batsmen got full value for their strokes.

Pollard was joined by Darren Cumming, who continued his excellent form from the week before, and Cumming again reached 50.

There were some useful runs from the lower order, with Jordan Watts in particular looking in good touch for his 21. Eventually, Eastbourne declared on 234 for eight after 52 overs.

Eastbourne got off to a great start in the field, picking up a wicket in their first over, bowled by Martyn Ward. Soon it was time to turn to spin, and Joe Barnett and Cameron Smith bowled for much of the rest of the innings, each taking three wickets.

Chichester were always running slightly behind on the required run-rate, and despite efforts to encourage them to push harder and so open up the chance of victory for either side, it seemed as though they were happy to settle for a draw.

Cumming illuminated a strong overall fielding performance by Eastbourne when he took a great catch in the outfield to dismiss John Edwards, who top-scored for the hosts with 57.

Chichester finished on 202 for seven, but Eastbourne’s young side can take plenty of heart from a good all-round performance on a pitch where forcing a victory was always going to be a tough challenge.
