Player agent riles boss Wilson

Eastbourne Borough boss Garry Wilson is furious with player agents for scuppering a deal to sign a Championship striker ahead of their clash with Altrincham tomorrow (Saturday).

Wilson claims the unnamed striker, who wanted to sign, will now be sitting on a bench this weekend instead of helping Borough's desperate quest for Blue Square Premier survival.

Borough's fortunes had improved briefly with a fine away triumph at Cambridge United, followed by a rousing 2-1 victory against Dean Saunders' Wrexham side at Priory Lane.

But three consecutive defeats have left Wilson's men hovering perilously close to the drop zone in 19th place, on 29 points after 32 matches.

Wilson said, "These agents are filling players' heads with complete nonsense.

"They think they know what they are talking about but they are giving bad advice.

"This lad wanted to play for us and the deal looked likely to get done until the agent got involved. It's very frustrating for us.

"The player was told he would get a league club which in the end didn't happen. He will now be sitting on a bench this weekend doing nothing when he could have been playing at a decent level with us.

"There are decent players up and down the country sitting on benches doing nothing when they could be playing.

"A lot of that is down to agents promising things to players that they cannot deliver."

Boro's lack of striking options has been highlighted in the last three defeats. They failed to register a shot on goal at Rushden & Diamonds and didn't score against Luton Town or on Tuesday night at Altrincham.

With relegation worries increasing, Wilson added, "We are in a dogfight and the players have to realise that.

"We are pointing out the mistakes but there is no point hammering them. We need the players to be confident and to handle this sort of pressure. This is a new experience for many of the players."

Tomorrow's game will be a chance for Boro' to exact quick revenge for Tuesday night's 3-0 defeat at Altrincham.

The visitors are 11th in the table with 44 points from 29 matches. On the road they have won seven, drawn three and lost four, picking up 24 points.

Veteran defender Marc Pullan is set to make his 200th appearance tomorrow.

Wilson said, "Marc has been an absolute rock for us. He has been so consistent and is a real quality defender. He is getting on now and we know he will be a very tough player to replace."

Keeper Danny Knowles didn't travel to Altrincham and remains doubtful with a virus. Brighton & Hove Albion teenage keeper Mitchell Walker, who was signed on an emergency loan hours before Tuesday's game, is on stand-by.

Darren Baker will play at left back following Sacha Opinel's midweek dismissal and Neil Jenkins is still suspended. Midfielder Danny Brown is troubled by a knee injury.
