Former Wimbledon champions Martina Hingis and Conchita Martinez will make a return to the court at next month’s AEGON International at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park.
Both former tennis stars, who won singles titles at Wimbledon in 1997 and 1994 respectively, will join Greg Rusedski and Mark Philippoussis in a legends match on Father’s Day.
Rusedski and Philippoussis are scheduled to lock horns in a singles match before pairing up with Hingis and Martinez for a mixed doubles fixture.
The matches on Sunday June 17 will be part of a packed week at Devonshire Park as this year’s AEGON International event takes place between 16-23 June.
Five-time Grand Slam champion Hingis said, “I have special memories of playing on the grass from my career and I’m looking forward to playing on the Devonshire Park courts.”
Martinez, a runner-up at Eastbourne in 2003, added, “I have played at Eastbourne many times before and I can’t wait to get back on court.
“I always enjoyed playing at Devonshire Park and I’m sure this year will be a great event.”
Former British number one, Greg Rusedski, said on his return to Eastbourne,
“I’ve always enjoyed playing on grass and I’m looking forward to trying out the Devonshire Park courts.
“The AEGON International is always a fantastic event and I’m glad to be part of it.”
Philippoussis, who will be making his first appearance at Devonshire Park, added, “I’m excited to be involved in the AEGON International this summer. I’ve never played at Eastbourne during my professional career but I’m certainly looking forward to playing again this year.”
Crowds are expected to flock to Devonshire Park this year, especially with the news that admission for the opening day will be free of charge.
In the main draw, former world number one and current number six, Caroline Wozniacki will be competing alongside Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. AEGON International champion Marion Bartoli will be returning to defend her title and 2008 French Open champ Ana Ivanovic has confirmed her place in the draw.
Polish world number three Agnieszka Radwanska and world number 10 Vera Zvonareva from Russia are the other headline players in a world class field set to hit Eastbourne this summer.
The men’s have seen Richard Gasquet, Marcos Baghdatis, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Australian teenager Bernard Tomic all confirm their place.
Tournament director, GavinFletcher said, “Both draws look really strong and I’m sure they will deliver some high class tennis.”
