STEVE Wraight held his nerve to sink a six-foot putt as Willingdon progressed to the next round of the Cyril Blake competition against last year’s semi-finalists.
A wet and windy Willingdon hosted their first round tie against Slinfold Park. The normally reliable pair of Derek Head and Ken Penfold were well beaten 6 and 5 however this result was quickly offset as captain Mike Rham and Roland Blaber registered a fine 5 and 4 victory.
Shaun South and Brian Ashman saw an early lead disappear and lost a close match one down.
The match, which had been contested in great spirit by both teams, now relied on Colin Wood and debut team member Steve Wraight winning their match to enforce a sudden death playoff.
A 2 and 1 victory by the Willingdon pair convinced captain Rham to put them into the playoff and his decision was rewarded as Wraight sunk his nerve jangling putt on the first extra hole to win the hard fought tie for Willingdon in very testing conditions.
Meanwhile, the winner of the Brassey Bowl 2012 at Willingdon was James Pritchett. The Brassey Bowl is a par/bogey competition and James returned a score of 1. In second place with a 0 score was Dean Jarvis on the back nine from Grant Jarvis.
Winners of the Bank Holiday Texas Scramble with a gross score of 55, nett 52.9 were Andy Theo, Des Brockwell, Brian Ashman and Mark Wootten. Runners up were Mark Killeen, Jason Killeen, James Smith and Sam Killeen, who had a gross 63, nett 55.
Willingdon Seniors were brought back to earth following their fine win over West Hove by a heavy away loss to Haywards Heath 6/2.
First out Seniors Captain Malcolm Rolfe could not sustain his early season form and together with Sean O’Neil suffered a 6/5 loss. Second pair out Colin Wood and Paul Roberts brought hope to Willingdon scrapping home 1 up. The next five games were lost with only Colin Jeff and Mike Hartley bringing some relief with a win of 6/4. A home win over Lamberhurst 4.5/3.5 brought some much needed relief to Willingdons team selectors but their hopes were dashed by a 5/2 with one half loss to The Neville at home.
The stars of this match were captain John Payne and the ever steady Rodger Savage, who won 6/5. Mention must be made of Dave Harmer and Brian Hepburn who, in the last match out, came home with a 1 up win.
The last of Willingdons April matches saw a good home win against Cooden Beach. The result was six games won and one half
