Rovers and Harriers hold off a stern challenge from Hastings

The Hailsham Harriers combined with Eastbourne Rovers and recorded great results in the first round of the 2012 Sussex Vets league meetings held at the Eastbourne Sports Track at Cross Levels Way.

The men held off a challenge from Hastings AC with Brighton & Hove City third and the ladies main competition came from Brighton & Hove City with Haywards Heath Harriers third. For Harriers there were notable performances from Gary Judges who was second in the 3000m in a time of 9m 55.9s with Paul Standen-Payne second in the B race in 11m13.8s and Dale Martin first in the 50+ with 11m18.5s. Bill Fraser came fourth in a non score race with 11m59.2s.

In the 800m Andy Ruffell had a good run with a second place in the A race with 2m35.0s. Dale Martin was first in the B race in 2m47.9s. Andy Payne recorded first in the 50+ with 2m26.3s and Bill Fraser second in the 60+ with 2m51.1s.

In the 200m event Harriers sole competitor was Dale Martin with a 5th place in the 50+ event with 38.1s.

Rovers athletes dominated the scoring in the field events with Harriers Dale Martin supporting in the Pole Vault with a third place.

In the 4x400m relay Paul Standen-Payne, Gary Judges, Richard Halpin and Andy Payne came out winners in 4m43.4s to enhance the combined team scoring to give them 120 points and the victory.

For the ladies Sam Alvarez took the win in the 3000m with 11m11.1s and Fiona Bugler first in the B race with 12m08.9s. In the 800m event Jane Barlow had a good win in the A race with 2m49.5s and Juliette Sukoco a win in the B race with 2m59.2s. Jane Barlow sprinted to second in the 200m sprint 32.7s while Juliette Sukoco won the B race with 35.1s.

Julie Chicken triumphed in 50+ with 34.9s.Julie also supported the Rovers athletes in the field with a third place in the Javelin (12.75m) and a third in the Long Jump (3m20cm). Jane Barlow, Juliette Sukoco, Di Farmer and Sam Alvarez stormed home in the 4x400 relay with 5m10.6s to give the ladies the overall win with 94points.
