Olver’s 2012 Olympic hopes are dented after Russian defeat

Eastbourne’s Olympic badminton hopeful Heather Olver faces an uphill challenge to qualify for London 2012.

British Badminton doubles star, Olver, and her team-mate Mariana Agathangelou battled it out for a place in the semi-finals at the European Championships in Sweden on Thursday night.

Facing the defending champions meant that this was going to be a very tough challenge for the British duo.

Russian second seeds Valeriy Sorokina and Nina Vislova proved too strong and despite a decent display Britain’s hopefuls lost 20-22 21-16 21-13.

Olver and Agathangelou have to perform outstandingly in the Indian Open at the end of April if they have any chance of ensuring a place on the court at Wembley Arena this summer.

With the qualification deadline coming up on May 3, it has to be a place in the finals or even a win if there is any hope of making the London Olympics.

Meanwhile, Eastbourne triathlete Todd Leckie will battle for Olympic ranking points at the San Diego World Triathlon Series event in May.

He will battle it out for GB selection with British number three Will Clarke and three time Olympian Tim Don for a chance to compete at Hyde Park in August 2012.
