There was a great turn-out as 51 ladies competed for the Sunshine Trophy at Willingdon.
The trophy is in memory of Viv Eley, Ladies Captain in 2007, who sadly died two years ago.
Just 30 minutes before the first tee time, the rain stopped and the skies cleared.
The trophy, presented by Jake Eley, Viv’s son, was won by Olga Evans with a net 73 on countback from Sandra Ashman. The winner of the scratch prize was Kim Hepburn.
The Willingdon ladies had their annual ladies invitation to the men called the Stella Haffenden Salver.
48 men and women played on a very warm but windy day in this Greensomes competition: 1st: Jane Jones and Tony Uden 47 pts, 2nd: Jean Uden and John Payne 43pts, 3rd: Sandra Hendrie and OLi Hayes 42pts, 4th: Sylvia Huggair and Ray Callaghan 40pts.
Meanwhile 38 ladies played in the Cannon and Jenkins competition.
Some of the players abandoned the competition after eight holes due to the weather but the rest battled on and the final results show how difficult the conditions were. Cannon Trophy: Albena Bailey 34pts, Val Seal 33pts, Sandra Hendrie 33pts. Jenkins Trophy: Olga Evans 29pts, Jenny Fahy 29pts, Maureen Pereira 29pts.
Centenary Cup: 21 ladies competed for the Centenary Cup. The sun shone but the players had to battle against the strong wind. The winner was Rachel Holmes with a net 75 second was Rachel Sellence with a net 76 and Sandra Callaghan also with a net 76 the winner of the scratch prize was Kim Hepburn.
Willingdon Seniors welcomed Lewes to the first leg of this summer series.
Captain Malcolm Rolfe, together with John Heald, got Willingdon off to a good start by winning their match 4/3.
The next three matches went Willingdon’s way. A momentary blip by Jack Taylor and Kelvin Hosken who lost 4/3 gave Lewes a short break from an onslaught that saw Willingdon win seven matches with just one loss.

Two day’s later Willingdon entertained the Seniors from Holtye G.C. Holtye struggled with the coastal wind and Willingdon took full advantage of the familiar conditions and beat Holtye 6/2. ]
