South Wales Warriors, 13.

Eastbourne’s running back Ben Chukwu-Onu played a key role as Sussex Thunder returned to winning ways.

With the memory of last week’s demoralising defeat still fresh in their minds, Sussex Thunder got their championship bid back on track with an impressive win against the South Wales Warriors on Saturday.

The game, which took place under the floodlights, was a lively encounter from start to finish.

The Thunder offense, marshalled by Eber Kington, seem to be gaining more momentum with each passing game and they simply had too much for a brave, but ultimately over-matched, Warriors defence.

Chris Jones, the games MVP, had an outstanding day racking up 79 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including a 28-yard reception that put the result beyond doubt in the fourth quarter.

Thunder’s running back tandem, of rookie Ben Chukwu-Onu and the bruising Jamahl Alert, continued their ‘thunder and lightning’ approach to the game, rushing for almost 200 yards between them as they took turns to rack up large gains on the ground.

Defensively, the Thunder started slowly and almost allowed a touchdown on the Warriors opening drive. However, as they began to find their rhythm, the Warriors offense started to struggle and were lucky that, due to miss-heard coverage call, they were able to get their final touchdown in the third quarter.

Despite the slow start, Dom Gould, the defence’s stand out performer, and Dan Appleyard both picked off the opposing quarterback as the Thunder’s grip on the game tightened.

Now, with a 4-1 record, the Thunder know they are becoming a target for opposing teams and will, subsequently, need to continue improving for every game.

Next up the previously vanquished Cambridgeshire Cats travel down to Sussex for what should be another great home game on Sunday.
