EIGHT Hailsham Harriers lined-up in the third running of the Brighton Marathon on Sunday, last week.

Sue Cooper had a tremendous run to be first Harrier home in a personal best time of 3h37m27s which broke the previous club age group record by a staggering 14 minutes.

The weather was chilly, particularly early on, but sunny conditions were enjoyed by the competitors and masses of spectators who lined a mainly flat route starting from Preston Park and finishing at the seafront in Madeira Drive.

Won by Kenyan star Peter Some in a record time of 2hr12m03s, the excellently organised event attracted a record entry of some 18,000 runners. The first lady was Sviatlana Kouhan, from Belarus, in 2h29m37s.

Harriers’ positions and chip times: 1161st Sue Cooper 3h37m27s, 3081st Peter Drake 4h07m53s, 3468th Graham Hollands 4h11m00s, 4877th Sandra Fowlie (PB) 4h21m54s, 5153rd Ian Turnbull 4h20m38s, 6596th Martin Ballan 4h48m39s, 7788th Karen Breese 5h24m28s, 7789th Richard Tickner 5h24m28s.

In the series of mini mile runs for youngsters at the same venue, Sam Palframan had a great run in race four to come 31st from a field of 89 with a time of 6m50s.

News of the club’s Milland Road Race will appear in next week’s Gazette. Harriers are now into summer training, meeting at Hailsham Community College playing fields on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm.
