Strong performances despite a chilly start

The Bank Holiday weekend saw Eastbourne Rowing Club take part in the first two summer regattas of the season over Saturday and Sunday at Worthing.

Despite extremely unseasonal sea temperatures and weather, Eastbourne put entries into most races and the crews delivered consistently strong performances.

The Veteran 40 + crew of Lesley Baker, Alan Baker, Nick Norwood and Alan Warland took close 3rd places on both days.

Both the Junior Senior crew of Alan Warland, Alan Baker, Nick Norwood, Chris Warland and Andrew Poyntz-Roberts and the Ladies Novice four of Rosie Pugh, Jasmine Perry, Tayla Bouwer and Koral-Lee Prodger took second place both days.

Eastbourne coxswains Max Fisher, Lucy Wright and Ben Howell deserved a medal for coxing in such adversely cold conditions.

Both days saw the club’s new novice members Luke Sprintall, Robert Johnson and Amar Duratovich compete in a mix of four and pair races.

The Men’s Under 16 crew of Matt Whitehead, Ben Howell, Max Fisher and Lloyd Heathfield stormed through to take second place in the Men’s Junior Fours on Sunday.

Novice Scullers Matt Whitehead and Max Fisher braved the cold conditions to complete the races both days with Matt having his best result so far of third place on Sunday.

After the regatta, Eastbourne captain Alan Warland said, “Our crews deserve a lot of credit for putting in some excellent performances over two tough days.

“We’ve made a very good start to the season and we’ll be looking to build on that over the coming weeks.”

Eastbourne Rowing Club will be offering local residents the opportunity to have a go at rowing this Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm at Langney Lake, off Sevenoaks Road.
