Special Olympics success at Sport Park

MORE than 170 athletes flocked to Eastbourne Sports Park last weekend as Special Olympics Eastbourne hosted their Regional Athletics competition on Sunday.

Athletes travelled from the south, south east and London areas to take part in track, field and relay events such as 50m, 100m, long jump, soft ball throw and javelin.

The participants, all of whom have a learning disability, were divided into groups of between three and eight athletes for the tournament.

After a day’s play, each proud athlete got their time on the podium to receive either a gold medal, silver medal, bronze medal or participation book mark.

Some athletes even got their medals presented to them by Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd, who called in watch the events and chat with the athletes.

Special Olympics Eastbourne was formed in 2002 for anybody over the age of eight as a way for them to compete with people of similar age and ability.

This event has always been very successful in the past and is just one of the many regional events the organisation takes part in throughout the year.
