Eastbourne Rowing Club at the Dover Regatta

Eastbourne Rowing Club celebrated the Jubilee weekend with a series of strong performances at the Dover Regatta.

After negotiating Operation Stack on the M20 and then the harbour swimmers, the club posted good results in a number of races.

The first race of the day saw Eastbourne’s Boys U16 crew of Max Fisher, Ben Howell, Matt Whitehead and Lloyd Heathfield with cox Alan Baker take first place in the U16 quads race.

They followed this up with a second place in the Men’s Junior Four.

The Girl’s U16 crew took second place in their race, with Rosie Pugh and Koral Prodger then joining with Jasmine Perry and new recruit Lucy Byrne in the Ladies novice Fours. They came home in a respectable fifth place.

Eastbourne’s new Men’s Novice combination of Amar Duratovich, Luke Sprintall, Max Fisher and Lloyd Heathfield also came in a creditable fifth place in increasingly turbulent seas.

The Men’s Novice sculls saw three entries from Matt Whitehead, Max Fisher and Chris Warland, with Matt taking second place.

As racing conditions deteriorated, the Men’s Junior Senior Four of Alan Baker, Nick Norwood, Alan Warland and Chris Warland showed real grit to secure a good second place in their category.

Buoyed up with their strong showing, three of the crew then raced with Lesley Baker in the Veteran 40+ category, taking first place over both crews from local rivals Bexhill.

This earned the crew 5 points towards the CARA Championship.

Late afternoon sea conditions then became increasingly dangerous. This saw Rosie Pugh, Lucy Wright and Emma Williams unable to take to the water in their debut sculls race as the Umpires had to make the decision to cancel the race due to safety concerns.

Club captain Alan Warland said afterwards, “Despite the difficult conditions, our crews gave an excellent account of themselves and I’m very encouraged by how everyone pulled together on a challenging day.”
