One-hour 11-minutes for super fast Sam

TWO Hailsham Harriers recorded stunning results in a Sussex Grand Prix series event hosted by Lewes AC.

Sam Alvarez won the ladies’ race and finished 29th overall in a time of 1h11m57s, while Gary Judges followed up his great run at the Barns Green Half Marathon by coming secondoverall in 1h03m55s.

In fact, Judges was only 10 seconds behind winner Philip Hardaway, from Haywards Heath Harriers, and was placed first in the vet category.

Three other Harriers also competed in the Lewes Downland 10 off road race which produced 226 finishers. Dave Coulson finished 46th in 1h15m11s, Graham Purdye was 84th in 1h19m33s and Peter Drake came 165th in 1h35m13s.

The event provided competitors with a challenging 10 mile off road course north of Lewes.

The start was in the field adjacent to the motor road below the old racecourse, and very early on the course climbed towards Blackcap and the side of Mount Harry with its stunning views across the Weald, but there was no time to look as the runners headed towards the top above Plumpton.

The course turned south through chalk and downland tracks on National Trust land near Ashcombe Bottom with a muddy section to contend before a steep climb to the return section of the course back to the outskirts of Lewes.

Hailsham Harriers is now turning its attention to the first of the cross-country races.

Any runner interested in taking part within the teams is welcome to come along to one of the training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Summerheath Hall, Hailsham, starting at 7pm.
