EASTBOURNE Rovers U17 4x100 relay team destroyed the championship record which had stood for 26 years at the recent County Athletics Championships in Crawley.

The team of Matt Ginno, Jordan Surridge, Joel Harvey and George Marsh were in devastating form as they finished in a time of 43.9 seconds, leaving a full 60 metres between them and their closest rivals.

The meet, which took place on the 12th and 13th May brought an Eastbourne 1-2-3 finish on two seperate occassions. Joel Harvey recorded victory in the men’s U17’s 200 metres in 21.9 seconds, equalling the all time club record of any age group.

Harvey romped home ahead of Eastbourne’s Matt Harrison and Matt Ginno, who claimed silver and bronze.

Victory now means Harvey is ranked number three in the UK.

Eastbourne’s second 1-2-3 came in Sunday’s U17 men’s 100m final, George Marsh (11.5) finishing just in front of Matt Harrison (11.8) and Adam Hutchings(12.3).

The senior men’s races saw Calvin Kirstein running against ex-international runners. Despite this, Kirstein finished in an impressive fourth place in both the 100m and 200m.

Senior men’s club captain Stuart Pelling will be pleased after recording a season’s best of 54.5 in the 400m to take fifth place.

Away from the track, Dwain Dibunoh took bronze in the discus with a throw of 31.22 metres.

The biggest improvement of the weekend came from Esther Reynolds.

The youngster knocked three seconds off her previous best in the final of the U17 women’s 300 metres with a time of 44.2 seconds, agonisingly missing out on the medals by one place.
