EASTBOURNE Rovers Cycling Club enjoyed a weekend of success as they smashed a host of personal bests in competitions across the country.

At the Bec Cycling Club 25 mile time trial in Crawley, Iain Brogden won the event in a time of 53 minutes and 10 seconds, beating Conall Yates of In Gear Racing Team by just one second.

Elsewhere in the Eastbourne team, Matthew Woods took fourth place with a personal best 54:44, with John Cordner also breaking his own record, finishing seventh at 56:10.

The team, also including Adam Ford, Tony Murphy and Geoff Smith, overcame the torrential rain and flooding to take the team prize and set a new veteran (over 40s) team record with a combined time of 2:44:24.

Brogden said, “The rain was heavy and the roads flooded in places, making conditions difficult.

“However, we still managed speeds of over 40mph and with the top three riders neck and neck at the 20 mile point, it made for some exciting bike racing.”

In Shropshire, Peter Moon represented Eastbourne in the National 100 mile championships.

A strong ride earned him 22nd place among some of the best long distance racers in the country.

His time for 100 miles of 4 hours 8 minutes 29 seconds was a personal best.

At Gravesend Cyclopark in Kent, Ollie Priddle was representing Eastbourne Rovers in the National Youth Circuit Race Championships.

After a strong performance in the early stages he got caught up in a crash on lap two and damaged a tyre. He managed to continue but later withdrew from the race.

Matthew Woods had better luck on Saturday in the South Eastern Road Club 10 mile time trial at Crawley where he rode to another personal best of 20 minutes 51 seconds for 3rd place.

Eastbourne Rovers Cycling Club meet every Monday night 7pm at Stone Cross Memorial Hall for an easy ride suitable for all experience levels and any type of bike. New members are very welcome.

On Saturday July 21, the club will be at the Old Town Fair. Come along and test your speed in the wattbike (stationary bike) racing challenge and chat about cycling in general.
