One of the Strangest games ever - Tomsett

Eastbourne batsman Luke Well’s blasted a superb century during a high-scoring draw at Brighton on Saturday.

Sussex professional Wells cracked 169 from just 126 balls but was adjudged LBW as Wells closed in on a double-century and potentially win the game and gain much-needed points for Eastbourne.

The magic 200 was achieved however by Brighton’s Chris Liddle who made 209 on a fine batting track and lightening fast outfield.

Skipper Mark Tomsett described the match as as, ‘One of the strangest games I have ever played in,’ after he watched the home side post 345-4.

Tomsett dropped Liddle in the first over in the slips when on nought. Liddle was then dropped on eight futher occasions as he went on to bludgeon the Eastbourne attack to all corners.

It was a superb batting wicket but it was the visitors’ fielding that was causing the biggest problem as a total of 11 catches were dropped.

Liddle’s first-class average of 12.55 was put to one side as he eventually made 209 not out off 138 balls, including 12 sixes, to help Brighton & Hove declare on 345 for four. Despite this spectacular run-fest, the Eastbourne bowlers stuck to their task well.

Eastbourne’s reply began steadily, and after 20 overs they were 100 for two, but the next 10 overs brought more than 100 runs as Tomsett, who made a good 65, and Wells hit out.

The 21-year-old Wells has four first-class centuries to his name already, including one at the beginning of the season against Surrey, and he was not going to miss out on an opportunity like this one.

He raced to three figures and was eventually disappointed to be adjudged LBW when on 169 in 126 balls. Aaron Mullins (35) gave good support, but he fell soon after.

Eastbourne could not keep up the momentum and ended up on 318 for eight, unable to make the final push for victory in a day that had seen more than 660 runs scored at a rate of more than six runs an over.
