Eastbourne Cricket Club are gearing up for their final preparations ahead of the new season with a friendly and cup contest this weekend.

Eastbourne’s competitive campaign starts with a match against Horsham on May 5 but the team will be hoping the weather improves enough to allow them some game-time before then.

A scheduled friendly with Horsham was called off last weekend but, weather permitting, they face another friendly match this Saturday with Mayfield.

Then, on Sunday, they play fellow first XI Premier League side Preston Nomads in round one of the ECB National Club Championship Cup at the Saffrons.

Eastbourne captain Mark Tomsett (pictured) said, “We’ve not been able to get on grass as much as we’d have liked because of the weather but hopefully these two matches will go ahead and we’ll be able to get some good practice in before the season.

“Sunday will be a very good test for us as Preston Nomads have been a good side for a number of years now.”

Preston boast the leading wicket-taker from last season in Carl Simon, however he won’t be permitted to play on Sunday as the cup doesn’t feature overseas players.

“They rely on Carl a lot, so it will be a blow for them that he can’t play. However, I’ve got no doubts that we have the best bowling line-up here and hopefully they’ll do all the right things on Sunday.”

Likely line-up: Mark Tomsett, Bradley Smith, Matt Green, Luke Tomsett, David Twine, Stuart Pulford, Richard Smith, Edward Giddins, Jamie Goddard, Matt Cooke
