New boy Marum eager to seize chance

New striker Liam Marum believes Eastbourne Borough can be the surprise package of the Blue Square Premier this season after completing his first training session with his new team-mates.

Marum, 21, and the squad were put through their paces at the sports science department of Brighton University at Denton Road in Eastbourne last week and he revealed he has never felt better.

The striker signed from Woking said, "I feel great. I am 100 per cent fit and I cannot wait to show the Boro fans what I can do. This is a big season for me and it's one where I'm determined to get my career going.

"For one reason or another things have not quite gone my way. I lost a bit confidence and the goals dried up. But the management here obviously see something in me and I am determined to repay that faith.

"This is a club with real ambition. I could see that after my first meeting with Garry and Nick (manager Garry Wilson and assistant Nick Greenwood). They really sold it to me, told me all about the club and where they see it progressing. I knew I wanted to be a part of that."

Boro beat two other Blue Square Premier clubs to the striker's signature, one of which was FA Trophy winners Stevenage Borough.

After further discussions with Boro, Marum's father and Boro midfield general Danny Brown, who he played with at Cambridge United, made up his mind to head south.

He added, "I still live in Essex but there are four of us who live within about 10 miles of each other. Me, Dan (Brown), Danny Knowles and Michael Jordan all share lifts to matches and training so it works out well.

"It takes about two hours to get to Eastbourne but that's football and we are used to travelling. Last season I had a two-hour trip to Woking.

"I really think we can be the surprise package this season. We have made some great signings and I think there could be another couple on the way."

Despite netting just three goals in 16 games for Cambridge and nine from 79 league matches with Woking, Marum believes he has the game to score consistently at this level.

"This is the first season I have set myself a target for a long while. I spoke with the boss and he thinks I can get 15 goals," he went on.

"That's the target so hopefully I can achieve that and push on from there. I'm very confident and feeling positive about this season. I can't wait to get started."

Greenwood added, "This is a great opportunity for Liam. He showed us that he really wanted to come here and play for this club and that can only be a good sign.

"He has a lot of raw ability and hopefully he can improve with us and we can help get the best out of him."

Boro also hope to complete the signings of two attackers this weekend. Both are believed to have Blue Square Premier experience.
