Eastbourne captain Mark Tomsett believes that his side has a great opportunity to challenge for the top in the Sussex Premier League this season.

Although last weekend’s washout was frustrating, all the other teams in the league will also go into the new season lacking match action after recent bad weather.

The Saffrons club did at least have the advantage of an Easter tour to the West Midlands to get in some early match practice, as well as being an excellent team-bonding exercise to welcome in new players.

They will hope to be able to train on the grass during this week ahead of their first league fixture, when they welcome Horsham to the Saffrons.

Speaking about Eastbourne’s prospects, Tomsett said, “Everyone has been in the same situation – we can’t use our lack of match practice as an excuse.

“With the arrival of spinner Aaron Mullins from Adelaide and David Twine from Hellingly, we have one of the best bowling attacks in the league, and it is the duty of the batsmen to give them something to bowl at, and to take responsibility for making the necessary runs.

“I am delighted that we have also been able to strengthen the batting line-up, with Matt Green coming from Brighton and Jamie Goddard from Seaford, who will provide some extra grit to the side.

“We have to approach the season believing we can win the title, and to do that it is important we get off to a good start.”
