New beginning for rugby club
Eastbourne Rugby Football Club is preparing for a new beginning as it stages its annual meeting tonight.
New director of rugby Nigel Gossedge is in the process of putting a team of all the talents together to support Rick Walshaw, who has been confirmed as head coach.
This will be a demanding year for Walshaw and his team as London South East Two is looking even stronger with the addition of Bromley and Tonbridge Juddians.
Last year, Eastbourne finished bottom of the table (which was then London South East Three before close season restructuring) and were saved only by Lordswood's demise.
Before a whistle has been blown or a try scored, however, the rest of the club find themselves in a strong position with the second XV promoted to the Sussex Intermediate League.
Gossedge told Herald Sport, "This has been a dream start for us and I am grateful to the Sussex League administrators for allowing our argument for the Nomads (second XV) to be entered into the expanded Intermediate League.
"This, together with the promotion of our third team after their excellent season, and the permission to enter a fourth team in Sussex Three means we start the season with teams in each of the different levels in Sussex.
"We will be able to offer competitive quality rugby to all the players of Eastbourne. In development terms, this puts us a year ahead and benefits enormously our commitment to bridging the gap between colts and seniors."
With new teams, there will be added competition for places and recruitment of new players. With an emphasis on fitness and coaching, there will be an increase in the number and type of coaches involved.
Training starts this Tuesday with a players' meeting at 6.45pm followed by fitness testing and then touch rugby.
In July, training will be at the clubhouse in Park Avenue from 7pm on Tuesdays, and Thursday training will take place at Whitebread Hollow from 7pm.
All players will be welcome; for further information contact Gossedge on 07515 431179.
Minis' rugby training week, fun and skills will be from 10am-3pm, ages 7-10 years, starting July 6.
Junior rugby training week, fun and skills, will be from 10am-4pm ages 10-13 years, starting July 6.
