The Eastbourne Junior Hockey Squad finished the season in fine style with a double success at the Sussex In2 Hockey tournament.

On Sunday, teams from all over East and West Sussex played in a closely contested tournament, with some fine hockey on display.

Eastbourne Girls under-12 won all five of their group matches, scoring 10 goals and only conceding two, including wins over East Grinstead and Chichester, setting up a semi-final match against Horsham.

The defence of Kate Horrigan, Lucy Nottage and Millie Garner held firm while darting runs (and goals) from Holly Fletcher-Price, the passing prowess of Isabel Louesber, combined with the tenacity of midfielders Lauren Privett and Ciara Farrell and goal scoring abilities of Alexandra Watson and Florence Ferrari, ensured no opposition defence could rest easy.

Holly Fletcher-Price scored the crucial golden goal in the semi-final to set up a final against Mid Sussex. Eastbourne began well and scored the winning goal midway through the match. The girls will now go on to represent Sussex at the regional championships at Teddington in April, which will be tough but hopefully rewarding.

It also proved a great day for the boys as they got through their group and progressed to the final, where they met former tournament winners East Grinstead.

A stunning run and goal form Cam Swatton opened the scoring. East Grinstead tried hard to break but the Eastbourne defensive combination of Evan Hind and Jack Dor were up to the challenge. Continued midfield pressure from Ashraf Osawil and Lucas Askaroff saw a great passing combination, which then found in-form centre forward Hugo Askaroff who calmly converted past the East Grinstead ‘keeper to take the final with a 2 -0 win.

Captain Lucas Askaroff was presented with the County shield and medals were awarded to the rest of the team. Man of the tournament was Hugo Askaroff for scoring 15 of the team’s 24 goals. The team conceded no goals throughout the entire tournament. The boys will now represent Sussex at the London regional finals.
