British pair Heather Watson and Laura Robson lit up centre court in the early evening sun tonight to reach the second round of the women’s doubles.
Watson, from Guernsey and Robson, born in Australia and resident in London, started the first game well and took a 40-15 lead against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Czech Lucie Safarova.
But this initial advantage was lost and they quickly lost the first two games. However, they won the next six games to take the set 6-2 with a Robson ace.
At 2-0 in the second set, the Brits eight-game winning streak was ended as their opponents started to fight back. Once again though, Watson and Robson showed that they are potential tournament winners by making it 3-1 with immediate reply.
They then took the set 6-3 courtesy of a double fault, a disappointing end for their Russian and Czech opponents.
