Men’s 2012 Sussex tennis team champions, Devonshire Park, continued their fine form last week.
Eastbourne LTC defeated Bexley from Kent 5-1 to earn promotion to the South East of England Regional Division of AEGON Team Tennis.
Club captain Gary Lewis said, “We are the equal third oldest tennis club in the world, founded in 1880, but this is arguably our best team result in our long 132 year history..”
Devonshire Park club captain Gary acknowledged a well fought contest.
He said, “Bexley made a spirited effort led by travelling performance coach Rob Smith, who gave our No1 Christopher Simpson a tough match.
“Bexley were excellent hosts and the match was contested in good spirits by all concerned.”
Devonshire Men’s singles captain, 37 year old former pro Jason Barnett, who is ITF world ranked no3 singles 35 & over, is still unbeaten in singles for the club.
He has an incredible 24 consecutive singles victories, and has only missed one Devonshire Park match in four years.
Jason said, “When Gary Lewis and I started at the club we had serious team ambitions.
“It’s amazing really, starting in Division 12 Doubles leagues and only four years later we are Sussex champions.
“Under Gary’s management and with former GB Davis cup player Nick Fulwood’s support, we have built a team with a strong spirit and morale that can compete with the best in GB.”
Jason believes that with Gary’s drive and A1 Pharmaceuticals’ continued sponsorship, it will enable the club to strengthen the squad and, within the next few years, compete to win National titles.
Gary said, “I would like to thank all his players, captains Jason Barnett and Ian Brown Little, Sussex county tennis volunteers Michael Coomber, Phillip Latham, and our chairman Ken Pollock for their welcomed support.”
