A group of local players representing England Schools in this weekend’s Schools Table Tennis International came back with an impressive six medals between them.
Yuki Watt, of Bedes school, played for England Under-16 girls and won the team event with partner Maria Tsaptsinos of Berkshire. They beat Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Guernsey to take the title and Yuki remained unbeaten. In the individual event, Yuki managed a silver medal after a cracking final with team mate Maria.
Jack and Josh Bennett, of Willingdon Community School, also performed well for their country, Jack playing for England Under-16 boys in the B team with Joseph Langham Ferreria. They took the silver medal in the team event, recording great wins over Ireland, Wales and Isle of Man, with Jack remaining undefeated until the final.
In the individuals, Jack, who was seeded fifth, took an unexpected bronze, beating the Irish number two and Scottish number one.
Josh, representing England Under-14, had a great weekend and remained undefeated in the team event until the semi-final stage. Playing with Alex Ramsden from Northants, they had convincing wins over Wales, Scotland and Guernsey before coming up against England A in the semi-final. They battled all the way, just losing out 3-2.
Playing off for the bronze medal Josh and Alex beat Ireland convincingly 3-1. Josh also lived up to his number four seeded position in the individuals, taking the bronze medal. Josh had to beat team mate Alex in the quarters, but did this 3-0, only to lose out in the semi to number one seed and eventual winner Chris Wheeler of Scotland.
