Court One witnessed the second major upset of the day after number one seed Agnieszka Radwanska suffered defeat at the hands of world number 40 Tsvetana Pironkova.
World number three Radwanska lost in straight-sets to the Bulgarian, which means she will follow number two seed Petra Kvitova out the door after just the first round.
Radwanska just didn’t get started on the grass courts at Devonshire Park, losing the first set 6-2 and the second 6-4.
The first-round match lasted just over an hour and will now see Pironkova progress to the final eight to a meeting with either Petra Cetkovska or Carla Suarez Navarro.
Radwanska, speaking after her shock defeat, said, “It wasn’t my day today, that’s for sure. I was playing a lot of tennis this year and I was tired.
“I tried everything but she was really playing good. There is not much time before Wimbledon but now I can have one or two days rest - not pick up a racquet at all, not even put on my sports shoes.”
