More than 400 children turned up to a free tennis camp held during the February half-term, despite the cold weather.
Tennis in the Park’, Eastbourne’s community tennis club in Gildredge Park, hosted the successful event that was open to every primary school child in the town, completely free of charge.
Children as young as three turned up to enjoy the facilities during their half-term break, even though snow covered parts of the courts.
Francis Mackie, the club’s director of tennis, was delighted with the turn-out and said, “Tennis in the Park was set up to make tennis accessible to everyone all year round and this event was fantastic, with hundreds of children playing on a proper court for the first time.”
Tennis in the Park has more exciting plans in the pipeline, starting with the construction of a mini tennis facility on the grounds of Ocklynge School, with whom the club has recently formed a partnership.
The Lawn Tennis Association, who are also involved in this partnership, will fund the new development.
On top of that, the Tennis in the Park club are launching another initiative later this year called ‘Play Tennis 2012’, whereby all adults and children are offered the opportunity to receive free tennis coaching. You can find out more by calling 07837 890429 or by visiting www.playminitennis.
