Hailsham Harriers had a squad of seventeen of their runners out to maintain their position in the fifth round of the East Sussex Sunday Cross Country league races held on the Ashdown Forest organised by Crowborough Runners.

Conditions were muddy with a cold northerly wind but almost 200 runners took part over an undulation course exceeding five miles and the Hailsham Harriers were rewarded with a second place overall to the current leaders Lewes AC and from the combined Uckfield and Heathfield team in third.

The winner was Peter Woodward from the host club Crowborough Runners but the excellent Sue Fry was the first Harrier home with a brilliant run to take the ladies win with 16th overall and Paul Eccles 23rd ,Alan Thornton 25th and Tom Clewley 31st leading the mens team.

Harriers Individual positions and times were as follows: 16th Sue Fry (First Lady) 42m32s, 23rd Paul Eccles 43m06s, 25th Alan Thornton 43m20s, 31st Tom Clewley 43m34s, 32nd Liz Lumber (Third lady) 43m43s, 37th Alissa Ellis 44m13s, 44th Jamie Grenfell 44m33s, 51st Graham Purdye 46m12s, 61st Dave Coulson 47m35s, 69th Mark Gilbert 48m52s, 70th Ivor Rumsey 48,56s, 111th Peter Drake 53m41s, 117th Audrey Haddon 54m44s, 132nd Brian Winn 56m14s, 158th Catherine Brewer 63m47s, 171st Nina Rumsey 69m41s, 174th Lesley Underdown 76m14s.

All eyes will be on the final round to be held at Blackstock Farm Hellingly on Sunday, March 8. The Harriers will look to follow up their impressive performance at the Ashdown Forest and maintain their position in second overall.

Meanwhile the first of the Road Race season has arrived with the Chichester Priory 10k race which took place last Sunday, February 7.
