The St Bede’s Senior School Girls’ under-18 football team defended their title by once again winning the Independent Schools’ Football Association National Sevens Championship .
Victory capped a superb year for Bede’s football, with the boys’ under-18 team successfully defending their title as National Champions in September.
The Eastbourne school won their group with some convincing victories - 3-0 over City of London, Leweston and Kings Whitley, a 1-0 victory over Cheltenham Ladies College and a 1-1 draw with Halieybury.
The group games featured stunning volleys from Kayleigh Bonwick and Georgia Tibble, a debut goal from Paula Schapper, excellent finishing and crucial goals from Maisie Trafford, skilful dribbling from Laura Adebisi and Mia Bungaroo and solid defending from Elena South and Anouska Greenaway.
Marie Jagua also made her debut in goal and played superbly as fellow Bede’s Pupil Sophie Rudge was making her debut for Brighton.
In the semi-final, Bede’s found themselves 1-0 down at half-time to Stamford.
But after the break with a change of positions and formation, the girls came back to win 6-1, with Kayleigh Bonwick scoring a spectacular hat-trick.
Bede’s then met Haileybury in the final and, despite a very close game, the girls played a disciplined match to win 2-0.
The under-18 squad was presented with their trophy by Clare Rafferty, an Olympian from Team GB and an England player.
She said, ‘I was very impressed with the quality of football played today. Congratulations to Bede’s - your style and cohesiveness as a squad earned you this title.’
St Bede’s hope they can achieve similar success in their 11-a-side cup match against King Edwards Whitley in a week’s time.
The team consisted of: Elena South (Captain), Marie Jagua, Paula Schapper, Kayleigh Bonwick, Laura Adebisi, Georgia Tibble, Mia Bungaroo, Maisie Trafford and Anouska Greenaway.
