Sussex Ladies League Premier
Mid Sussex 2 Hailsham5
Hailsham Ladies ended their run of defeats with a hard-fought 5-2 victory away to Mid-Sussex 1s at Ardingly College.
The home side nearly took the lead from a penalty corner early on, but the shot went wide and Hailsham fought back to win a penalty corner of their own which was upgraded to a penalty flick as a goal-bound shot was stopped by a defender’s foot.
Susie Smith duly stepped up to take the flick and put the visitors one goal ahead. Hailsham dominated the rest of the half, with Emma Allen deflecting a penalty corner strike from Alison Headey into a second goal to give Hailsham a 2-0 lead going into half-time.
Mid Sussex got themselves on the score sheet early in the second-half with a well-struck penalty corner shot.
But with Hailsham fired up by conceding the goal, Smith and Michelle Page broke through the Middies’ defence with Page delivering the ball to Smith who beat the keeper with a reverse strike for Hailsham goal number three.
Despite Headey striking goal from another penalty corner to put Hailsham three goals clear, Middies fought on they scored their second goal from a penalty corner.
However, it fell to Smith to take final honours, beating three Mid Sussex defenders, rounding the stranded keeper and slotting the ball home for her hat-trick and to give the Hailsham Ladies three points and their best league result of the season.
In the Sussex Open League Division One Alex Smith scored twice as the men drew 2-2 at Brighton and Hove third team.
Next week Hailsham are away at South Saxons. Kick-off 3.30pm
