Dennis Smith took the Red Dragon Eastbourne Darts Open title at the weekend after edging an enthralling final with a last-leg victory against Barry Knight.

Smith, from Wiltshire, had beaten Essex’s Jamie Robinson in the semi-final to book his place in the last two on Sunday night, where he met Kent’s Knight, who had seen off Steven Douglas, also from Kent, in the last round.

The final exceeded everyone’s expectations. Knight won the first two legs, only for Smith to win the next three. After Knight drew level, both men took turns to win a leg, meaning the title went down to the wire as they both battled to bag six legs first.

It was Smith that prevailed, winning the title to top off a day that saw him hit 26 tons and a maximum 180.

That exciting finale rounded off a successful event that also saw Paul Hogan beat Sam Head 4-0 in the men’s singles final on Saturday and Buckinghamshire-based Fallon Sherrock beat Casey Gallagher 3-2 in the ladies final.

In a very impressive youth competition, Andrew Clark took the title after battling back from two legs down to beat Josh McCarthy in the final leg, with both players hitting maximums along the way.

Darren Webster and Andrew Golding took the Open pairs title and Tammy McKenzie, Josh Newland and Dennis Smith won the mixed triples. Thanks go to Wizard Sports Events and Sussex Ladies.
